LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – A state-of-the-art multi sports complex will be built in the Russell neighborhood.

Mayor Greg Fischer announced Tuesday that the Louisville Urban League was selected to develop the complex on the 24-acre Heritage West property, located at 3029 West Muhammad Ali Boulevard.

The complex will feature an indoor track and field arena and will be designed to host a variety of sporting events. Retail space and related amenities will also be included in the design.

Described as a state-of-the-art facility, the indoor venue would be a rarity in this part of the United States. Officials believe its events could draw tens of thousands of visitors to Louisville and the Russell neighborhood each year.

A single shovel of dirt has yet to be moved, but Karl Schmitt, President and CEO of the Louisville Sports Commission, said the facility is already in demand.

“This is a little bit pie-in-the-sky,” Schmitt said, “but we’ve already received an RFP (Request For Proposal) from US Track and Field for their 2019 and 2020 indoor championships. I don’t think we’re quite ready for that yet, but it just demonstrates the confidence US Track and Field has in the type of facility we’re talking about here.”

The Urban League proposal was one of four competing at one time for development rights. Getting the green light from the city is only the most preliminary step. Funding still has to be secured. Louisville Urban League CEO Sadiqa Reynolds said the money will likely from a combination of sources.

“So tax credits have not been ruled out,” Reynolds said. “Bonding, you know all of those things are options. So as we develop our agreement, then we’ll say more about that.”

The project is expected to cost $30 million.

Mayor Greg Fischer said the city’s contribution will be significant.

The development could be completed in 2020.
